Statement

A lot of my work so far has been commissioned by small companies, galleries and individuals who saw work at an exhibition or came across my through social media or my website. Some commissions come from friends and family, but most are by recommendations and networking. Regardless of the relation, the nature of any commission is such that my creativity is influenced and galvanised by what others want. This interaction invariably produces exciting and innovative results through the use of unexpected or less familiar materials and methods. It gets me out of my ‘comfort zone’ and I learn new skills and techniques. Commissions can, for the same reasons, be challenging but I have come to love the research, investigation and negotiations needed for a successful piece of work. It also makes me produce more substantial and ambitious pieces.

When it comes to working for ‘myself’ things seem to work very differently. My work is generally informed by what is around me in terms of material as well as my surroundings. I never seem to need to ‘look for inspiration’ and for a good number of pieces I simply waited for a piece of stone to 'tell' me what it wants to be. It may sound a bit silly but I find that this is the case particularly with carving. Once I see an object – either a figure or animal – within the form, it is easy to carve around it to expose its surface. Some people are naturally more inclined to carving – ‘taking away’ and I do love working that way but I also enjoy making objects – by adding or ‘putting on’- Two very different approaches to sculpture, both equally important and valid.

Chronology

I was born in Subotica (former Yugoslavia) in 1970 and I started practising art there at an early age but it was only after I emigrated to Britain and after completing my art degree that I became a professional artist. (BA Fine Art, First Class Honours Degree at De Montfort University, Leicester) I am also known as Jericho – a name given to me by my wife and now adopted as an alias.

My portfolio consists not only of sculptures and three dimensional works but also paintings and drawings. I love working in stone and metal, but I've also worked with cold casting and wood, mixed media, and indeed any material that comes to hand.

I have had a number of commissions for paintings and sculptures, both abstract and figurative, for corporate clients and individuals.

I have been an active member of Surrey Sculpture Society  over 10 years and have taken part in a group exhibition at RHS Wisley in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2017, Savill Gardens in 2007 and 2008, Borde Hill Gardens in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and Denbies Vineyard in 2007 and 2010. I was a member, for two years, of 2 by 4 Artists group in Horsham and took part in 2 group exhibitions in 2005.

I organised a venue and showed work, with two other artists, at the Artists and Makers Festival Open Houses and Studios in Horsham (HAOS) area in July 2006 and am taking part in 2018 with artists based at Sussex Sculpture Studios in Billingshurst. Also I had a solo exhibition at Roffey Park Institute in Horsham in 2008.

I took part in Birtley House Exhibition in 2010, with 50 other sculptors in the area.

Exhibited at Bell Fine Art Gallery in Winchester and exhibited at the Acorn Galleries in Billingshurst, West Sussex - one man show from 5th April to 25th April 2007 and Quaker Art Week in Dorking in 2008, London Affordable Art Fair in Autumn 2004 and 2010. I have shown work at the Cow Shed Studios in Steyning in 2009 and 2010. I had a solo exhibition of drawings, paintings and sculptures in June 2000, at the Quaker Meeing House in Leicester after attaining first class honours degree in Fine Art from DeMontfort University, Leicester, in 2000.

I sold work through ArtParks International and exhibited with FreshAir Sculpture.
